The Sporting News — Spurs 126, Timberwolves 97: Wembanyama posts 27 points and 17 rebounds in return
The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 5, 126-97, giving San Antonio a 3-2 series lead heading into Game 6 in Minnesota. Wembanyama finished with 27 points, 17 rebounds, five assists and three blocks in his return.
Five games in, it’s difficult to imagine Minnesota forcing a Game 7 and winning the series. It took losing Wembanyama in the second quarter of Game 4 to flip that contest; with him on the floor tonight and nearly 20-point performances from three other Spurs, it proved too much for the Timberwolves to overcome.
The Timberwolves’ only lead came at 2-0; after that, they would tie or trail by as much as two at times, but the Spurs were in control for most of the night, maintaining 7- to 16-point leads throughout. The one area Minnesota “won” was free-throw percentage (80% to 78%); the Spurs controlled everything else.
Minnesota got double-digit scoring from four of their five starters, but no one reached 20. San Antonio, by contrast, had five players in double figures, including Wembanyama’s 27 points and 17 rebounds. Keldon Johnson added 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting.
The series pivots back to Minnesota for Game 6, which will tip off at 9:30 p.m. ET and air on Amazon Prime Video.
The San Antonio Spurs lead the Minnesota Timberwolves 3-2.
Largest lead: 23 points.
