One more win would send the San Antonio Spurs back to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2017. In Game 5, coach Mitch Johnson spread the minutes and involved a lot of players, helping San Antonio cruise to a 126-97 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Amid the chaos, Victor Wembanyama appeared clearly fueled, returning from an ejection with a chip on his shoulder and delivering an NBA Playoffs record last touched by Anthony Davis.
In 33 minutes, Wembanyama went 9 of 16 from the floor and 4 of 10 from three, totaling 27 points. He also handed out five assists, pulled down 17 rebounds, and posted three blocks that stifled any Minnesota resurgence.
The Spurs big man became the first player since Anthony Davis to record 25+ points, 15+ rebounds, 5+ assists, and 3+ blocks in a playoff game, per StatMuse.
Notably, Davis managed to come out on top in the NBA Playoffs after nights like these. It also signals that the Spurs have the ability to win the Larry O’Brien Trophy if coach Johnson and Wembanyama maintain this level of synergy.
The Spurs can close out this playoff series in Game 6, but it will require more than this performance from Wembanyama. Can they return to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2017?
